MB350 Reaches for the Sky!
from our March, 2000 Issue

Taking down a seven-story parking deck at Brookwood Hospital in Homewood, AL was a tall order even for Tomlin Excavating & Demolition Co., who had experience with this kind of project. The 100' structure – being demolished to make room for hospital expansion – was a stretch for the specially designed CAT330BL, whose maximum reach is 77'.

Fortunately, the deck was built into a slope. Bobby Tomlin, President of Tomlin Excavating, said they began demolition on the side of the structure that was on the upside of the slope, where they were able to reach the top deck. After making a good start, there was enough debris on the ground to crawl the CAT right onto it, giving it enough extra height to attack the other sides of the building. The CAT330BL elevates and tilts to give the operator a view of his work space. (Editorial observation: Telescopic vision must be helpful when controlling a demolition attachment from a distance of close to 100'!) Tramac's MB350, attached to the custom boom, ate through the thick concrete and steel pans and beams with ease thanks to the MB's extra wide jaws, which are designed to make short work of concrete and steel members in one operation. The MB's patented cutting surfaces are built in – work never has to stop while blades are tightened or replaced. Once the material was on the ground, a Tramac PFH1000 sheared it down to size for removal. The PFH can split and process heavy demolition debris of this type far more efficiently than competitors' units because its patented fin-shaped breaker tooth is 40% more efficient that the traditional pointed or diamond-shaped tooth. The entire project took 75 days to complete. Terry King of Thompson Tractor, Birmingham, AL, is Tomlin's salesperson.
